Science Olympiad

El Rodeo Middle School Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a national program of regional, state, and national science competitions based on 23 rigorous and spirited academic events, ranging from building towers and bridges, to solving mysteries through forensic science, to learning more about academic subjects such as astronomy and chemistry. The Los Angeles Regional competition is generally the first Saturday in March.

El Rodeo has had a great tradition of participation in the Science Olympiad. In each of 2005 and 2006, El Rodeo’s teams finished in the top six schools in the Los Angeles Region and attended the State Finals! At the State Finals, individuals on the El Rodeo team earned several medals, including those in the top five/six in their division of over 40 schools! El Rodeo’s middle school students accomplished these great results even when competing against teams which had five 9th graders of their 15 member team, as is permitted by the rules of this middle school division.

El Rodeo organizes its Science Olympiad team every fall. The team consists of 20 students from 6th – 8th (15 competing members and 5 alternates). Students are encouraged to get involved. Science Olympiad has a high school division so when your students are at BHHS they can continue their participation in this incredibly spirited and valuable endeavor. Since it is an entirely extra-curricular endeavor, parent involvement is critical (but no science background is necessary)!
