Dear Parents:

You are invited to attend an information meeting for the parents of students identified as Gifted and Talented. At this meeting you will have the opportunity to ask questions about the Beverly Hills Unified Gifted and Talented Program. In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn about resources for your child. You can find information about this meeting on the reverse side of this letter.

The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program supports unique opportunities for high-achieving and underachieving pupils who are identified as gifted and talented. By state definition, gifted students are pupils who possess a capacity for excellence far beyond that of their chronological peers. This capacity includes many and varied characteristics that require modifications of curriculum and instruction. These modifications form the basis of gifted and talented education services.

Though funding for Gifted and Talented Education has been deemed flexible by the State of California and redirected to the general fund, BHUSD strives to adhere to the basic tenants of their plan. These tenants include:

  • Inspire and challenge GATE students with curriculum commensurate with their abilities, talents, and needs throughout the year.
  • Provide GATE students a variety of teaching strategies structured to nurture intellectualism, critical thinking, independent study skills, appropriate peer interaction, and self-awareness.
  • Plan and organize GATE curricular components as integrated differentiated learning experiences within the regular school day within the general classroom.
  • Continually strive to improve the quality of the existing program by providing on-going professional development for teachers.
  • Provide parents of gifted and talented students with opportunities to learn and grow.

We hope you will be able to attend the information meeting.

Sincerely,

Brian Tash
Director, Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
