As the second grade team, we work closely to create an environment for our students that is academic, nurturing and meaningful. With the district math initiative as our framework, we incorporate math talks and hands-on real world connections that teach concepts to create a love of math. Along with the reading series, we incorporate literature, current events, and grammar skills to build a foundation for writing.
Second grade is a dynamic year. Already we are learning about plant and animal life cycles in science. In Earth Sciences, we’ll explore what Earth was like long ago, as well as our planet’s resources. In the Physical Sciences, the students will differentiate between solids, liquids, and gases and learn how matter can change from one state to another. In social studies, we’ve begun our study of primary and secondary sources and how different perspectives affect what we know about our family and ancestors. We will continue to explore the lives of actual people who make a difference in our everyday lives, in addition to learning the stories of extraordinary people from history whose achievements have touched us. Mathematics is moving right along toward mastery of the addition and subtraction facts. The students are improving their mathematical reasoning skills as we learn problem-solving strategies, and they’re already encountering beginning algebra problems. Finally, we’re writing up a storm! We will focus on utilizing the writing process and writing clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea. Applying the writing strategies that they will learn in class, the students will write brief narratives and friendly letters. We will write across the curriculum, and the students will be encouraged to express their creativity while developing their mastery of mechanics and grammar.
Some wonderful extensions to our program include The Puppet Lady, Poetry Jam, and our Cultural Arts Program.
It is our goal to teach the components of a standards based curriculum to promote life-long learners.
